OUR HEROESRay and Sue Haakonsen
Sue and Ray were both born and bred in Zimbabwe and met in 1977. Ray was a pilot in the Rhodesian Air Force from 1975 to 1981. Sue trained as a nurse in Rhodesia. They married in 1978 and had two children whilst still in Zimbabwe.
Ray and Sue moved to South Africa in 1981. They share strong Christian belief that has led them to undertake missionary work with Youth With a Mission in South Africa. As part of their service they raise their own personal financial support. Ray has served in various leadership positions within the mission since 1981 and completed leadership and community development training. He also took outreach teams from South Africa to do Christian outreaches and visits to the Amazon, Barcelona Games, Lesotho, Mozambique, Uzbekistan, Greece, Amsterdam, and others. Sue has been involved in medical type ministry, completing training in Primary health care and community development and doing outreaches to Mozambique. They share a passion for Africa and its people. In January 1997 they accepted a post as National Co-ordinators of YWAM in Lesotho. They moved with their now 3 children to the capital city of Maseru. After caring for an abandoned Basotho baby in their home in 1999, they felt called of God to begin a ministry to the abandoned and HIV-affected babies of Lesotho. In June 2001 they co-founded a ministry called Little Feet (later to become Beautiful Gate Lesotho) to fulfil this vision. In October 2003, Ray and Sue stepped down from their YWAM Co-ordinator role and committed fulltime as Directors of Beautiful Gate Lesotho. Me Matsukulu
‘Me’ Nelina M. Tsukulu is the residential care manager at Beautiful Gate overseeing a large staff of house mothers. A gentle soul with an easy smile, Me Matsekulu is stable figure in the children's lives, like a "nkgono", or grandmother.
Me Matsukulu was married on July 26th 1980 and blessed with four children. First a son and then three daughters. Her husband was a pastor but in July of 1999 they both became very sick with a flu, and on July 27th her husband died. At the time of her husband's death, her oldest child was 17 and her youngest was just 11. She was working with the LHDA water project until it was completed in 2001, but then struggled to find another job. It was such a struggle to continue to pay for general living expenses including the cost for the children’s school. Then her daughter fell pregnant with twins giving birth to a boy and a girl in May of 2003. Tragically, she became very ill after the twins were born and died just two months later. This left Me Matsukulu with no job and yet responsible for raising her two grandchildren in addition to her remaining three children. Then in September 2003, Me Matsukulu started working at Beautiful Gate and continued to receive fincancial support from her brother until he was murdered in 2007. She now relies soley on the pay she receives working at Beautiful Gate. Recently she purchased some land and is saving to build her first home. Me Matsukulu loves the children in her care and feels she is serving God everyday at Beautiful Gate. Truly devoted to her mission of care, Me Matsukulu claims she will work at Beautiful Gate until there are no more orphans or she is too old to continue. |
