Over the past two years, a reduction in funding has been felt worldwide and it is hitting the grassroots organizations the hardest. These organizations are instrumental in actually reaching the people, and there is a growing concern that the HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment programs, and the orphan care programs are in danger of reverting back to the under-funding and deaths of a decade ago.
Lesotho has a population of 1.8 million. In the November 2010 UNAIDS Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic, it states that Lesotho has an estimated 130,000 orphans due to AIDS in 2009. That is more than double the number estimated in 2001. In sub-Saharan Africa, Lesotho has second highest incident rate for new infections – four times higher than the continental average (Swaziland has the highest). AIDS is wiping out a middle generation and the care-givers are disappearing. There is an emergency in Lesotho. Simply put, they need our help. Monthly donations provide consistent and regular cash flow that help Beautiful Gate care-givers plan for the core needs of the children. This includes supplies for children's houses, medical supplies for acute and chronic care and house-mother, nurse, maintenance crew and administration staff salaries.
